#247: How Young People Use Their Story for Good - with Heidi-Marie Ferren
Heidi is a writer, actress and vocalist who is also the last and longest reigning Miss USO, performing & speaking across the globe in over 1,000 venues and before 4 U.S. Presidents.
As a vocalist, Heidi’s credits include performances with Taylor Swift, Patti LaBelle & Lee Greenwood.
She is currently preparing for her latest speaking series & book, America’s Sweetheart, based on her life and work with Service Members.
As a former foster youth and survivor of homelessness and incest, Heidi has passionately dedicated herself to helping young people use their story for good.
She is currently a Court Appointed Advocate for foster children and part of her story was recently featured in the book Brave in Real Life to support Brave Global in their fight to end the exploitation of young people.
Tools Heidi uses to move past fear, into being more fierce and on path:
- #1 for me is prayer. I talk to God and I listen to God.
- Repeating two things:
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
and also
" For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
- Jumping off the cliff and letting God catch me - forced failure and grace
- My time on earth is eternal until my work on earth is done.
- Flipping open the bible - emergency verse roulette
- Talking myself through it and going down the what if rabbit hole until it kills all of my excuses
- Isolating myself and literally forcing myself to be productive.
Important Topics
- Severe performance anxiety first week of rehearsals at USO- it was a nightmare
- Realizing in the field that I may not give the perfect turn out, or kick, but that my super power was my heart. Failure taught me my greatest gift and helped me learn to love it
- Being in foster care, repeatedly beaten and abused every time I told anyone, or asked for help
- Testifying against my biological father and abuser at the age of 4 in court and ending the day in my mother's arms
