1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

1このように、数えきれないほどの多くの証人たちが、競技場の観覧席で私たちを見つめているのです。だから、うしろへ引き戻そうとする力や、まとわりつく罪をふり捨てて、神の用意された競走を忍耐をもって走り抜こうではありませんか。

5 Samuel replied, "Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrateyourselves and come to the sacrifice with me." Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
5「いや、心配はご無用です。主にいけにえをささげに来たまでです。いけにえをささげるため、身をきよめていっしょに来てください。」サムエルはエッサイと息子たちにきよめの儀式を行い、彼らも招きました。
6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed stands here before the Lord."

11 So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered. "He is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives."

11サムエルはエッサイに言いました。「どうも主は、この息子さんたちのだれをも選んでおられないらしい。もうほかに息子さんはいないのですか。」
「いいえ、まだ末の子がおります。今、野で羊の番をしておりますが。」
「すぐ呼びにやってください。その子が来るまで、食事は始めませんから。」

13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.
13サムエルは、その少年ダビデを兄弟たちの真ん中に立たせて、持って来たオリーブ油を取り、彼の頭に注ぎました。すると、主の霊がダビデに下り、その日から彼には卓越した力が与えられたのです。こののち、サムエルはラマへ帰って行きました。

38-39サウルは、自分の青銅のかぶととよろいをダビデに与えました。ダビデはそれをまとい、剣を持ち、試しに一、二歩、歩いてみました。そんなものを身に着けたことがなかったのです。しかし、「これじゃ、身動きがとれません」と言うや、脱ぎ、 40川からなめらかな石を五つ拾って来ると、羊飼いが使う袋に入れました。そして、羊飼いの杖と石投げだけを持って、ゴリヤテに向かって行ったのです。

49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
48-49近づいて来るゴリヤテめがけて、ダビデは駆け寄りました。そして、袋から石を一つ取り出すと、石投げでビュンとそれを放ちました。石はゴリヤテの額にみごと命中し、額に食い込み、ゴリヤテの巨体は揺らいで、うつぶせに倒れました。
