Jake Kahana shares how to get more focused, so you can create the necessary space and time to give your most important work a fighting chance.

Jake is one of the co-founders of [CAVEDAY], in addition to Molly Sonsteng and Jeremy Redleaf.

I like to think of it as a day of focus. I had a chance to participate in their most recent event in New York City last month.

The day is organized into a series of work sprints from 9am to 5pm. They provide structure to reduce distractions, like handing in your phone as soon as you arrive, as well as the number of decisions to make, so you can dedicate your mental energy to doing your best work.

Jake supports himself as a freelancer designer who enjoys working with innovative brands to unlock the passion behind their ideas.

A few lessons packed into our conversation include:

Honing your story through a creative process of experimentation to identify what works and what doesn’t.
How Jake is learning to make the transition from a role as a one-man design team and to creating work for clients on an independent basis.
Exploration of the habits of personal productivity.

Coaching Advice

To increase your productivity, Jake suggests trying “time batching”:

Schedule your working time in a specific way.  Give yourself specific time frames for tasks like checking email, add it to a calendar, and stick to it.
