Encounter: Series Introduction

Encounter connects us to our beginning and calls us toward our end.

Four Types Of Encounter:

1. Forceful

Acts 19:3-9

Common attributes of a forceful encounter:

a.  A less than willing human participant.

b.  God or circumstances demolish one’s foundational assumptions.

c.  Jesus presents himself clearly.

2. Active

Genesis 12:1-3, Matthew 4:18-20

Common attributes of an active encounter:

a.  God initiates engagement.

b.  It interrupts the status quo.

c.  It often involves a promise.

d.  The encountered are left with a decision to obey or not.

3. Passive

Exodus 3:2-3

Common attributes of passive encounters:

a.  Something of note occurs but does not demand attention.

b.  Only the astute observer takes the time to notice.

c.  Investigation is required.

4. Pursuant

Matthew 9:20-22, Luke 18:35-42

Common attributes of a pursuant encounter:

a.  Desperation

b.  Humility

c.  The Miraculous
