According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), around one in five
adults experience a mental health condition at some point during their life.
Among student athletes, however, approximately 30% of women and 25%
of men report having anxiety.


According to the National Institute of Health dancers and performers  have higher distribution of PTSD (20.2%)
compared to the normal population (7.8%). They also had a higher frequency of
family members with mental illness, an inability to speak about their trauma,
and more suicidal thoughts. Mitchell DeSimone, is a Certified
Mental Performance Consultant, retired professional dancer.  Currently serving as a mental performance consultant
to NCAA teams, professional performing arts organizations, youth sport
organizations and individual elite and sub-elite athletes and artists and other
diverse client domains. Adjunct professor of psychology at Sacred Heart
University. Published research includes topics within mental health & elite
performance in the performing arts, perfectionism in sport and performing arts
and eating disorders in athletes and performers. Research projects currently
ongoing explore eating disorder development in elite and collegiate male
athletes, parental impact on youth athlete, performing artists (performance
& mental health), perfectionism in performing artists and more. He
