Evelyn Bowden points out the need for black business ownership for economic freedom and the survival of the black community. She talks about how coming out of slavery black forefathers and mothers knew the importance of landownership, education and being politically active to gaining and maintaining economic freedom and independence.

Tuscaloosa County Board of Education continues to build schools, but not in Holt, Alabama.   Holt High School was constructed in 1944. "...Board member Joe Boteler, who has advocated building a new Holt High, said the reason Holt has been neglected for decades is that no one has fought for it. “Holt just doesn't have any representation,” he said."  (Tuscaloosa News December 11, 2012).
