It's been nearly two years since Okada and Tanahashi last fought at the 2016 edition of the G1 Climax. It's been more than two years since they last fought for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 10. It's been more than three years since Tanahashi won a battle between the two at Wrestle Kingdom 9. Despite this, it was Okada who laid out the challenge to Tanahashi for them to once again battle for the IWGP Heavyweight title, and the reason that Okada made the challenge was if Okada defended the title successfully once more he would break the record for the most successful defences in a single title reign. The holder of that record? Hiroshi Tanahashi. And it was a cocky Okada who challenged Tanahashi at Wrestle Kingdom 6 which triggered this series of title matches.

So was Okada offering a title shot to Tanahashi due to his respect? Or to really rub it in his former Ace rival's face how much better he now is on the man who used to push him further than anyone else had done so on the New Japan roster? Lorcan (@lorcanmullan) and Simon (@simoncross3) are now back to the full conversational fitness and resumed their review of this great series of matches to find out exactly why this match is happening, and how it holds up to the previous nine matches where the clear status of who was the best had remained in question.
