When the sanguinary battles and conflicts of World War II came to an end on May 8, 1945, a tenuous and tedious relationship between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics began. That relationship — negligible from its onset — strained even more over the next 46 years, which sent the world into panic as the two global superpowers flexed their muscles at each other in bouts of verbal jousting, less-than-covert indulgence in localized conflicts around the globe, and missiles crises on two separate continents. This Cold War ended with the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 and the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, but the tension of that great tussle remains to this day. The scars of conflict between the two nations continue to play a role in not only the diplomatic strategies of the leadership of this generation, but also the involvement of the leaders in locations bearing literal scars of their entanglements. As such, the relations between these two countries can be described as a roller-coaster of emotion, speculation, accusation, acceptance, and disarray.
