Last Album on Earth is a music podcast where we'll discuss some of the greatest albums and songs we've ever heard – even if they're not some of your favorites. Some will be those widely hailed classics that everybody loves, but some will be those unheralded gems that are near and dear to us and should be to you as well. Each week we'll discuss one album and one song, and decide if we'd survive if that was the Last Album on Earth.

Day Fifteen: Tha Carter I-III

August 03, 2020 07:00 - 58 minutes - 66.9 MB

On the season finale we get a bonus, three albums worthy of the C word, for various reasons: Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter, Tha Carter II and Tha Carter III. Rarely is the metamorphosis of an artist so clearly displayed through a series of albums as when Wayne went from fun, frivolous southern act to bonafide emcee and all-timer over the course of four years.  Could YOU survive if these were the last albums on earth?

Night Fourteen: Grindin

July 31, 2020 05:36 - 18 minutes - 21.4 MB

Night Fourteen. We discuss the legendary "Grindin"

Day Fourteen: Lord Willin'

July 27, 2020 07:00 - 41 minutes - 47.2 MB

“I’m from Virgina,” is the mantra of the Clipse legendary debut Lord Willin. Buoyed by The Neptunes’ bouncy production, brothers Malice and Pusha T arrived with an explosion of new and intriguing sounds. But does one fun ride almost two decades ago mean you can survive forever with that ride?

Night Thirteen: 2009

July 23, 2020 07:00 - 12 minutes - 14 MB

Not every artist gets to add an exclamation point to their career, especially when they pass expectedly. Mac Miller got to do just that, even if accidentally, with the radiant and invigorating “2009.” Tragedy gives this special record even more weight, and it’s only right it gets its own time to shine on night 13.

Day Thirteen: Swimming

July 20, 2020 03:04 - 52 minutes - 59.9 MB

Growth. Healing. Resurrection. All things Mac Miller found and was able to beautifully project on his masterpiece, Swimming. Released just a month before his untimely passing, Swimming is the unique intersection between so much growth on display for an artist, and a ridiculous amount of untapped potential.  Could YOU survive if Mac Miller’s Swimming was the last album on earth?

Night Twelve: Freestyle

July 16, 2020 07:00 - 10 minutes - 12.4 MB

In a world full of meaningful music, sometimes it’s the frivolous and carefree music that sounds the best. Rich Gang’s “Freestyle” is as frivolous as it gets, in the best possible ways.

Day Twelve: Rich Gang: Tha Tour Pt. 1

July 13, 2020 05:32 - 36 minutes - 42.3 MB

On Young Thug’s rise to superstardom, the summer and fall of 2015 will forever mark a shift in the minds of some of his foremost pundits. While guest appearances Travis Scott’s Days Before Rodeo signaled what was ahead, Tha Tour was a true showcase of all of the elements that would make Thug a star. Rich Homie Quan did his best to keep up, and what listeners were treated to was the magic that helped catapult Thug to the next level.  Could YOU survive if Rich Gang: Tha Tour Pt. 1 wa...

Night Eleven: Won't Be the Same

July 09, 2020 07:00 - 12 minutes - 14.7 MB

It’s not easy to be transparent, but Boogie makes it sound so natural. He has no problems letting listeners know just how flawed and vulnerable he can be, making for a cathartic experience that very few can match.

Day Eleven: Thirst 48 Part II

July 06, 2020 07:00 - 40 minutes - 45.9 MB

All rappers get emotional but very few take it the full extremes that Boogie does. On his breakout mixtape, Thirst 48 Part II, the Compton rapper not only flexes his wide range of talents but his wide range of emotions as well. Happy, sad, thoughtful, ignorant and everywhere in between, Boogie shows us just how multifaceted he can be, all while showing you the ups, downs, lefts and rights of his doomed relationship. Could YOU survive? Some accompanying reading material: Boogie H...

Night 10: St. Elsewhere

July 02, 2020 07:00 - 12 minutes - 14 MB

The perfect synergy between producer and artist is on full display when CeeLo Green and Danger Mouse ascend room rarefied air on their debut album’s title track “St. Elsewhere.”

Day 10: St. Elsewhere

July 02, 2020 07:00 - 38 minutes - 43.9 MB

The phrase “ahead of its time” is often overused, but Gnarls Barkley is the rare time when it could not be more appropriate. A decade before melodic rampaging would become radio’s most omnipresent staple, CeeLo Green and Danger Mouse mastered the art and set the standard all at once. .

Night Nine: The Field

June 25, 2020 07:00 - 12 minutes - 14.7 MB

Sometimes a song perfectly encapsulates everything that makes an artist great. Nipsey Hussle did just that on “The Field,” with a verse so immaculate it almost feels bad Young Dolph had to try to follow that up.

Day Nine: Slauson Boy 2

June 22, 2020 07:00 - 40 minutes - 45.8 MB

For the second straight episode we spin an album from an artist we lost too soon. This time it’s Nipsey Hussle’s Slauson Boy 2, the culmination of Marathon Mondays back in 2016. Though it lacks cohesion, it more than makes up for that in quality, making SB2 one of the best outings of his legendary career. Could YOU survive if this was the last album on earth?

Night Eight: You sent me flying/Cherry

June 18, 2020 07:00 - 13 minutes - 15.8 MB

A pen and a voice, for the right artist that's more than enough. Amy Winehouse proves that on one of the most quintessential songs of her storied, but unfortunately short career with "You Sent Me Flying," an authentic "love song" truer to the realities of love than most.

Day Eight: Frank

June 15, 2020 07:00 - 44 minutes - 51.5 MB

Every once in a while a voice so unique comes along that their mark is left for decades to come. That’s Amy Winehouse, a genius with a song so vintage that it became timeless. On her debut, Frank, she displays all of the talent that would make her a worldwide superstar before her untimely demise.  Could YOU survive if this was the last album on earth?

Night Seven: Sing about me, I'm dying of thirst

June 11, 2020 07:00 - 14 minutes - 16.3 MB

With stripped down production and a muted delivery, Kendrick weaves together one of the most lasting and resonant songs in recent memory. The depiction of death, paranoia and growth is a record that will hold up for decades to come.

Day Seven: good kid, m.A.A.d city

June 08, 2020 07:00 - 59 minutes - 68.1 MB

Sometimes a prodigious talent just lives up to the hype. Often, there’s a moment you can look back on and remember just when they became what you’d always believed they could be, when all of the stars align and their talents are on full display. For Kendrick Lamar, that was his second album, good kid, m.A.A.d city.  On day seven, we decide if we could survive if this classic was the last album on earth. Could YOU survive?

Night Six: Garden (Say it Like Dat)

June 04, 2020 07:00 - 13 minutes - 15.5 MB

Vulnerability is always hard to access and project, but SZA does it with ease and grace on Garden. As she dives into her relationship woes and the angst of love, she opens up in a way that’s both jarring and resonant, with details so specific you just know it’s the result of real life experiences that can’t be feigned. It all makes for a journey that’s both enjoyable and oddly personal all at once.

Day Six: CTRL

June 01, 2020 13:30 - 35 minutes - 40.7 MB

Sometimes, even when you’re not the intended audience, an album is so good you can still appreciate the work. For us, that was SZA’s CTRL. But the question remains, does this album past the Last Album on Earth test. Could YOU survive if this was the Last Album on Earth?

Day 6: CTRL

June 01, 2020 13:30 - 35 minutes - 40.7 MB

On day six we listen to SZA’s climate altering smash CTRL.

Night Five: Mezmorized

May 28, 2020 07:00 - 15 minutes - 17.6 MB

Sometimes a record sets off a movement, and is the perfect encapsulation of an artist and a time. Wiz Khalifa and Cardo did exactly that with the Kush and Orange Juice opener, "Mezmorized."

Day Five: Kush & Orange Juice

May 25, 2020 07:00 - 43 minutes - 50.3 MB

Wiz Khalifa spent years building up an organic fanbase, and all that hard work finally paid off in 2010 when he made the leap from interesting online curiosity to superstar. Kush and Orange Juice served as a launch point and Wiz never looked back. The trendsetting mixtape's legacy lives on a decade later, and on Day 5, we decide if we could survive if Kush and Orange Juice was the last album on earth. Could YOU survive?

Night Four: Pyramids

May 21, 2020 07:00 - 14 minutes - 16.6 MB

Markas and Eddie defend which part of Pyramids they like best

Day Four: Channel Orange

May 18, 2020 07:00 - 51 minutes - 59.4 MB

Is one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the last decade fit to be the last album on earth? That’s the question we look to answer as we dive into Frank Ocean’s lauded album Channel Orange. Could this self-examination and discovery piece from one of this generation’s transcendent stars stand the ultimate test of time? We decide here.  Could YOU survive?

Night Three: American Dreamin

May 14, 2020 07:00 - 13 minutes - 15.5 MB

When your catalog is as deep as Jay-Z’s, is it even possible to have a best song? If so, “American Dreamin” exists somewhere near that distinction. While it may not be as renown as the typical, quintessential Hov standouts, there’s an argument to be made that it should be. Plus, a Marvin Gaye sample basically can’t miss.

Day Three: American Gangster

May 11, 2020 07:00 - 39 minutes - 44.9 MB

After his most critically panned effort of his career, the greatest rapper of all-time was somehow on the comeback trail. With a burst of inspiration from an Oscar-nominated film with the same name, American Gangster was born and Jay-Z was back in peak form. But is this classic fit to be the last album on earth?  Could YOU survive?

Night Two: Nice & Slow

May 04, 2020 07:00 - 9 minutes - 11.3 MB

We discuss why this our favorite song of My Way

Day One: Cilvia Demo

May 04, 2020 07:00 - 43 minutes - 49.7 MB

On his debut album Isaiah Rashad was somehow equal parts rambunctious, angsty, downtrodden and triumphant. He managed to do all of this on top of both rampaging, boisterous production, alongside ambient, soulful production. And sometimes he'd find a way to do both on the same record. Is that the right recipe to survive on a deserted island with only one album, forever?

Day Two: My Way

May 04, 2020 07:00 - 37 minutes - 43.2 MB

A re-debut of sorts, full of hits that lasted decades, Usher's My Way is both his reintroduction and his launch into superstardom. Is a mix of ballads, uptempo R&B/rap meshes and everlasting smashes the right album to survive a lifetime of solitude and a pair of headphones?

Night One: West Savannah

May 04, 2020 07:00 - 8 minutes - 9.77 MB

We both agree, that West Savannah is the standout of Cilvia Demo
