We are told that the first Christmas is about “good news of great joy”, but the truth is a lot of people missed it, lots of folks never encounter it. It is God’s idea that we have prepare ourselves for the coming of the Messiah so that we have eyes to see him when he actually comes. John the Baptist tells us exactly how to do this. What he tells us does not exactly sound Christmassy – it is not exactly tinsel and gingerbread men. It turns out that rebuke and salvation always go hand in hand.
