Scrapes are simply communication points where deer exchange specific identification markers from various glands. This allows other deer who visit scrapes the opportunity to identify it's previous visitors.

Several studies show a large percentage of deer activity on scrapes occurs during hours of darkness. This doesn't support great chances for harvesting deer over scrapes on a routine basis.
