Jane Addams Notes: Her Birthday is coming up 9-6

Jane Addams had close ties to early LF College, her brother-in-law an early staffer, and nephew an 1893 alum. She recruited here regularly for “residents” at Hull House, and in founding a Hull House clone in Philadelphia drew on a notable LF Univ. then alumna to start it up and do as she had done in Chicago.  Anna Freeman Davis, 1889, 1894 MA LFU. Etc.

Also, her big backer with her uncle Hull’s house was real estate tycoon-ess, Helen Culver. In 1900 Culver bought the land for and built the first Waukegan Rd. Estate, her house still on Ash Lawn, west off Waukegan a couple of blocks north of Deerpath.  The house was designed by Pond & Pond, the architects at Hull House’s campus—probably much funded by Miss culver. J. Ogden Armour started buying land south in 1904, and A. Watson Armour at Elawa Farm a decade later.
