In 1963, the diversion tunnels of Glen Canyon Dam officially closed, causing the waters of the Colorado River to back up 186 miles through Glen Canyon to form Lake Powell. Many people would like to see the dam gone – environmentalists, activists, river runners. Glen Canyon Institute's Eric Balken says this long-held idea of restoring a free flowing Colorado River through Glen Canyon might now be considered more seriously as climate change intensifies the conversation.
