Today’s Feedcast special covers everything you need to know about NovaPro. A high rumen bypass rape expeller that provides a sustainable and cost effective solution to meeting the protein requirements of high performing cows.

NovaPro is made from 100% British grown rapeseed which undergoes hot mechanical expelling of oil at Yelo in Stratford upon Avon. It is then treated with Xylig (natural wood sugars) and gentle steam treatment to increase the bypass protein content to a similar level to Soya (17% vs 17.6% bypass protein/DUP on an As fed basis). This is achieved without the use of chemicals, unlike Formaldehyde treated rape and rape extract which utilises hexane for oil extraction.  

It can be used as an effective Soya replacement on farm, with an improved amino acid profile compared to soya driving dry matter intake and milk yield. A trial run at the  University of Nottingham found the ration containing NovaPro to produce an additional 1.7L of milk per cow per day compared to a conventional Rape/Soya based ration with no change in constituents and an improved milk urea nitrogen(MUN) level -showing improved protein efficiency on farm, which can help to support improved fertility and lower ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions.

Another environmental consideration is that NovaPro only has 1/7 of the carbon footprint of soya . With processors and retailers committing to carbon footprint goals, farmers will need to evaluate the raw materials used on farm, looking at their origin, production and supply chain.
