The aged King Lear decides to divide his kingdom between his three daughters and gets in conflict with the youngest, most truthful, and loyal daughter, Cordelia. After banishing her, he finds no repose and respect among his other daughters, Goneril and Regan, and is abandoned in the wilderness. Losing his reputation as king, turning senile during a storm, left with only his loyal servants, Lear gains an understanding of the essence in life. All the while, Gloucester’s bastard son Edmund, working with Lear’s traitorous daughters, schemes against his brother Edgar in order to gain his birthright.

After being fooled by Edmund, Gloucester decides to pursue Edgar and punish him. Edgar runs away and disguises himself as a crazy beggar named “poor Tom.” Kent fights with Oswald, for he insulted Lear’s dignity, and gets put into the stocks by Regan and Cornwall. When King Lear sees Kent punished in a humiliating manner and finds out that his daughter and son-in-law placed him there, King Lear is furious and runs off to the woods. A storm brews.
