20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States.  We always ask why the women stay.  But we seldom truly hold their abusers accountable and ask them why they abuse.  Abusers manipulate and control their victims making it so that they really can't leave.   There is more than physical abuse.  There is emotional abuse, financial abuse and sexual abuse that all go hand in hand keeping the victim in the situation.  

My guest Donna Cohen has been on the board of Peaceful Paths for decades.  This organization helps women get out of these situations.  But it's not as easy as it sounds. Domestic abuse can happen to anyone.  It does not matter their social status.  And often times the act of leaving these situations can often be the most dangerous times for the victim.  This is when the abuser fears loosing control of their victim so they up the anti.   

As a friend watching someone important in your life being abused it's hard to know what to do to help.  You can provide support and assistance but often the victim is in so deep that they see that help almost as harm.  They don't know how to accept it because it's so far outside of their norm.  It hurts to watch the help you are trying to give them be rejected and know you only have so much to give before you go down with them.  

In this episode we discuss all of this.  I have been in emotionally and sexually abusive romantic relationships and friendships.  I know from a small window what it's like but I've also watched friends that are so emotionally beat down they don't know how to get out no matter how much I and others have tried to help and then blamed us for being the problem. This is a tough topic.  This is not a topic with an easy fix.
