Previous Episode: Teen Suicide Prevention

Today we are talking about the modern family — specifically, families that are created with the help of sperm donors. The children of the sperm donors but conceived into different families are referred to as diblings, which we hear about those relationships from our guest. An estimated 30,000 to 60,000 children conceived with donor sperm are born in the U.S. every year, though that statistic may well be an underestimate. The fertility industry doesn’t have to keep records, so the true number is unknown.

Ali Liggett, Leawood mom and one of our own KCMC contributors, is here to share her story and experience of conceiving her and her wife’s darling little girl, Amelia. We are so appreciative of her sharing her journey with us and hope you enjoy learning as much as we did.

Meet Ali Liggett

Ali was born and raised in Lee’s Summit, MO and graduated from the University of Central Missouri with a degree in Political Science. She met her wife, Abby, in 2015 and the two now live in Leawood, KS currently with their amazing daughter, Amelia. In addition to wrangling her daughter, Ali loves working out, road trips, Diet Dr. Pepper and advocating for causes she cares about. She’s never met a stranger and loves connecting with new friends.

What We're Loving In Kansas City
Jarvy's Shave Ice

Locally owned by a mom and former KCMC Contributor, Britni Jarvis, and her family. Their shave ice is the BEST! They are located in Lenexa and are also available to be hired for events. Sarah loves the orange creamsicle flavor!

Kids' Books for Pride Month
A couple of great books to check out when you're doing summer reading with your kids are Love Makes a Family and And Tango Makes Three. In Love Makes a Family, this simple preschool read-aloud demonstrates that what's most important in each family's life is the love the family members share- regardless of what a family looks like. And Tango Makes Three is a sweet story about two penguins in the zoo that need help having a baby penguin of their own. Both of these stories a great staples to add to your family's library.
