There are hurt feelings that run deep, but Alfred is able to make amends before he dies. And die he does, to the dulcet tones of Aelswith haranguing him for his choices regarding Uhtred. While everyone deals with the king’s passing, Thyra is harassed for being a Dane living among the Saxons. It’s enough to break your heart, and it’s a horrible side effect of Aethelwold’s scheming.
