The Art of Art Business May 30th 2021 Winston Smith and Alex Dorney

This week on The Art of Art Business we had special guests collage artists Winston Smith and Alex Dorney. Join Trigonal Gallery owner Jonathan Edward Goodman and Curator Morgan Jesse Lappin for a deep-dive conversation about the business of art from the artists themselves.

Winston Smith is an American collage artist, illustrator, and cover designer. He is best known for the artwork he has produced for the American punk rock group Dead Kennedys.  He also designed the Motéma Music logo.  He is responsible for the famous Alternative Tentacles logo as well as the well-known Dead Kennedys logo and six of their record covers. One of his compositions, God Told Me to Skin You Alive, was used as the cover of Green Day's album Insomniac. His work has also appeared in Spin, Playboy, Wired, Utne Reader, Mother Jones, Metro Silicon Valley, Ugly Planet, National Lampoon, and numerous punk fanzines. 

And we have Alex Dorney  is a 28 year old artist living in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He started doing collage in high school classes, and then began creating them in his free time. This continued on into college where he studied art for a few years. Unfortunately, he dropped out, due to a bipolar 1 diagnosis. Moving back home, he started an online vintage shop to support himself and later moved out to the Blue Ridge Mountains. He drove his art car around town collecting materials from thrift stores, auctions, yard sales and flea markets.

He creates surreal science fiction vehicles and machines. They all serve a function and exist in an alternate dimension called the Endless Plane. My work utilizes images from all sorts of vintage books and magazines. He is transfixed by bold advertisements for technology and products. Pens, Wheels, TVs, Toothbrushes, Reel-to-reels, Radios, and Boots are some of my favorite images.
