Hey everyone, Deanna here! You may remember our live pandemic web show, Happy Hour at the Chat & Chew Cafe. And many of you have asked for longer audio posts from Hightower, so we figured we’d combine these ideas into one brand-new series! That’s right, the Chat & Chew is moving from a TV show to a podcast.

Next week, we’re going to be in the studio with some pretty amazing new guests— Emily Drabinski, the 2023-24 president of the American Library Association, and Nadine Farid Johnson, who is the Managing Director of PEN America Washington and Free Expression Programs. And we’d love to have our paid subscribers join us to watch the live recording!

On Tuesday, 4/18 at 10:00am ET, we’ll be chatting together live to talk about the infuriating and implausible attacks on books, free speech, librarians and writers. From Texas to Missouri to Michigan and more, this coordinated and concerted effort in the name of “protecting” children is poisoning so many parts of our cultures, it’s hard to keep up. But everyday people are fighting back! And there’s tons you can do.

We also want to hear from you! To ask questions of our illustrious guests, go ahead and leave them in the comments below. When you do, and if you feel comfortable, let us know where you are geographically, too— we love seeing folks from all over the country. I’m still working out the nitty-gritty, but there may also be a live chat feature in the studio that you can participate in as well.

So, if you’re a paid subscriber and you want to watch the live version of our chat, click the link below at 10am ET on Tuesday. And if you can’t make it, don’t worry— everyone will be able to listen to the final version of the episode when we release it during National Library Week on April 24th.
