Jesse Jackson has long been a primary influence in my political life, for he is a leader who actually leads. In 1988, it was an honor, an education and a joy for me to have been part of his remarkable, grassroots presidential campaign. Jackson’s candidacy was historic, not only because he was the first Black man to make a serious, nationwide run for president, but most significantly because he intentionally organized a multiracial, populist campaign. I believe that combination is key if progressives are to coalesce a governing majority in our country.
