Erica Smith | Public Educator Challenges Climate Change Denier in U.S. Senate Race

Erica Smith is a member of the North Carolina State Senate who has represented District 3 (which covers the Outer Banks) since 2015. She was a candidate for U.S. Senate in the 2020 Democratic Primary, and she recently announced that she'll be running again in 2022.

The 2020 Senate race was narrowly won by incumbent Thom Tillis, a Republican who has denied the existence of climate change and who once introduced a constitutional amendment in the State House of Representatives that would have banned same-sex marriage.

On the other hand, Smith, a math and science teacher at a public high school, supports a "Six-Point Lesson Plan" that calls for:

1.) Economic expansion

2.) Environmental stewardship

3.) Education equity

4.) Equitable health care

5.) Equal justice access, opportunity & protection justice reform

6.) Re-engineering policies for progress, compensation, tax codes, immigration

Unlike her previous opponent in the Democratic Primary, Erica has pledged not to accept any campaign contributions from the fossil fuel industry or large corporate PACs.

Prior to becoming involved in local politics, Erica worked as a Senior Engineer for Boeing. She is also an ordained member of the clergy and used to serve as an Associate Pastor.
