BSides Las Vegas Number Ten
Flip That Vinyl One More Time

A conversation with Jack Daniel, Sean Martin, and Marco Ciappelli
Recorded at BsidesLV 2018
________________________________

As you can tell we were not in a hurry to publish the large amount of content created during our Las Vegas coverage. Instead, we decided to pace ourselves and give you the time to appreciate all the conversations we had.

This one was recorded by me and Sean Martin after we went to see what was going on at BSides and ran into the conference’s Co-Founder Jack Daniel.

Believe it or not, this year was BSides Las Vegas number 10 and what an exciting ride it has been for this organization! It’s come a long way since the days when a group of friends got together to discuss the possibility of an alternative formula to the mainstream conferences which were not addressing certain needs, and covering specific topics that were important and of interest for the hackers community.

There was a void left in this community by the big events. There was a need for a smaller stage, with dimmer lights and less pressure, that would allow more friendly interactions and a sense of community that would offer a welcoming environment to allow all the participants to express themselves and find the answers, the support, and the advice they were looking for.

BSides appeared to be just what was needed. It was well received and after a short amount of time, by 2010, they were already an event in Canada and Berlin. Now with 433 events since July 2009, BSides is now looking at expanding their conference to Beijing, Tokyo and Istanbul, just to mention some.

BSides conferences are locally run and independent from each other but they all follow the basic community rules that have been in place since the first event: don’t sell out, keep it open, and keep people informed.

The key is to welcome diversity and conform to the different cultures in the geographic areas where the conferences are organized and take place. It really is about strengthening the hackers community, giving back, and sharing their knowledge and experience.

Magic truly happens when you share content that excites people.
Throughout all these years at BSides all over the world, hackers got excited about sharing content, having constructive conversations, making connections, giving back and growing as individuals and as a community they all proudly belong to.

People that go to BSides conferences are not attendees, they are participants, and this word makes a whole lot of a difference as it is a clear invitation to join the conversation, and the event, in any way you wish and are able to.

It all makes sense now, doesn’t it?

Well, if it almost does but you want to dig deeper, maybe you want to flip around that vinyl record and listen to the other side of it, which in this case is our conversation with BSides Co-Founder Jack Daniels. It will all come together, really, as it always does when you listen to him.

Thanks for your time, Jack! It is always a pleasure to see you and listen to your stories.

Let’s spin this record and enjoy it!
