By Sean Martin and Marco Ciappelli

As "The World's Most Empathetic Hacker," Marcus J. Carey has built himself a long career in InfoSec and secured a well-deserved seat at the CyberSecurity community table. His roles in the industry, in the community, and society didn't happen magically. Growing up in his grandmother's house in a small town in Texas, the path wasn't easy for Marcus, and he took every opportunity to learn from those around him; including his grandfather, who was not only a carpenter that showed Marcus how to build things but also the male figure in his life, showing Marcus how to build himself.

During our conversation, Marcus shares stories of life during middle school and high school (where he was into programming) and getting recruited by the US Navy (where he worked on cryptographic communications).

We also discussed what it's like being an outcast and the role that played as he became a prominent figure in the hacker community. This success isn't something that takes over Marcus' mind, however. He remains humble and gives back to the community every chance he gets. One of the gestures worth noting here is the creation of the Tribe of Hackers book, where he recognizes other hackers' accomplishments good deeds.

We sure enjoyed another spontaneous and honest conversation.

We hope you do too.
