In Ezekiel chapter 4, Ezekiel himself becomes the prophetic picture. He is to make a model of the city under siege and then lie first on his left side for 390 days to represent the number of years punishment for the house of Israel and then 40 days on his right side to depict the punishment for Judah. And he is also to eat bread and water rationed as a sign of what the people will endure while they are in exile.

The judgment of God against Jerusalem continues in chapter 5 because of the people’s rebellion, wickedness and idolatry. Ezekiel is to shave his head and beard and split the hair to represent the three ways that judgement will come: pestilence, the sword and exile to foreign nations.

In the final chapter of today’s portion of the reading, the recurring refrain throughout the chapter, as God outlines the punishment that He is bringing on the people, is that they would know that ‘I am the LORD.’
