In the final two chapters of Amos, the warning of coming judgement continues. Chapter 8 opens with the vision of the summer fruit and the people’s deceit and maltreatment of the poor is condemned. God warns of a coming famine, not of bread or water, but of His word. Chapter 9 concludes on a positive note with the promise of the restoration of the tabernacle of David and the return of the people to the land.

The next chapter in the reading is the book of Obadiah, which has only one chapter. It is an oracle of judgement against the nation of Edom who were the descendants of Esau, Jacob’s brother – later named Israel – the ancestor of the people of Israel. Instead of being partners, the Edomites sided with the enemy against Judah and turned the people over to the Babylonian army. Obadiah prophesies the overthrow of their city and destruction of the nation.

Our final chapter in today’s reading is Jonah chapter 1. Jonah is called by God to bring a message to Nineveh. But he refuses and runs away, going aboard a ship. A terrible storm arises, and Jonah is thrown overboard where he is swallowed by a big fish.
