We start a new book today – first Kings, which together with second Kings were originally one volume in the Hebrew scriptures called the Tanakh. These two books along with first and second Samuel, selectively cover the entire history of the kings of Israel and Judah.

Several key events occur in 1 Kings including Solomon’s reign as king, the building of the temple and the division of the kingdom into the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah.

The two chapters for today’s reading, chapters 1 and 2 opens with an ailing David and a plot by one of his sons Adonijah, to take over as king. Nathan and Bathsheba work together and Solomon is anointed as king instead. David dies in chapter 2. Solomon puts to death Adonijah and those who supported him, installs Benaiah and Zadok and the chapter ends with the kingdom being established under Solomon’s reign.
