In this episode, Virginia Postrel, an award-winning journalist and independent scholar, discusses her new book "The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World," which is published by Basic Books. Postrel begins by explaining why fabric, a product we now take for granted, used to be very costly. She discusses the different technologies that enabled the mass-production of fiber, thread, fabric, and dyes. And she describes the social technologies that facilitated the distribution of fabric.
