Welcome back to Intellicast! In this episode, we’re joined by Brooke Reavey of Dominican University and EMI’s own Beth Teehan. Brooke is a professor, a Ph.D., and serves on the professional development and education committee of the Insights Association. Brooke talks with us about the impact DIY tools, HIPPA, and data privacy legislation may have on our industry. This is a topic that’s not being widely discussed, but maybe should be.
The interview kicks off with Brooke’s background in market research starting as an intern, traveling the world, and eventually getting her Ph.D. (which she describes as market research on super-steroids.)
Brooke then talks to us about her recent presentation at the Insights Association. She discusses the history of marketing—and this is not your average history lesson. Anyone in marketing or market research will be fascinated by the background of our industry and what it might tell us about our future.
She then gets into the potential issues in market research, particularly with the democratization of data and the use of DIY tools specifically. After the recent news of the supreme court taking on a case involving Section 230 of the Communication Act, Brooke discusses how the market research industry could be headed toward a reckoning of how we do business going forward, including what’s being taught at the university level.
Brian Lamar, Producer Brian, and Beth use the final portion of the episode to chat about the direction the industry is taking. This interview is a great one that has us deep in thought, so this debrief is much needed.
