Intel Chip Chat – Network Insights audio podcast with Allyson Klein: Video encoding has evolved dramatically from the old way of doing things – which relied on dedicated HW that was suitable for the live TV broadcast industry – to the new SW-based pipelines that are serving the client-driven adaptive bitrate video streaming services offered by Facebook, YouTube, Netflix and Amazon. The transition to cloud video encoding opens up opportunities to further improve quality of these services and enable new products. The majority of Facebook datacenter servers are powered by Intel processors – they are very reliable, energy efficient and high performance.

Dr. Ioannis Katsavounidis, Research Scientist, Video Infrastructure at Facebook, joins Intel® Chip Chat Network Insights in this archive of a live cast interview from the Visual Cloud conference and IBC Show 2019, in Amsterdam, Netherlands to describe video infrastructure at Facebook and the magic behind the scenes which enables delivery of outstanding visual experiences to Facebook users.

Dr. Katsavounidis shares how the industry is addressing the massive growth in video content how this is transforming the model of broadcasting to on demand video. He explains how AV1 was a huge step in the right direction, where the industry and open source communities need to continue to focus and advance codecs to meet the demands of Visual Cloud.
