Ray Suarez is a cancer survivor, writer, broadcaster, author, and podcaster who has worked for PBS, NPR, NBC, CNN, ABC, Al Jazeera, and many others over the course of a long career.

Every year, 100,000 new cases of colon cancer are diagnosed, sending people’s lives into a whirlwind as they begin treatment and come to terms with their illness. Ray Suarez’s cancer diagnosis propelled him through a cycle of emotions. Anger, sadness, tranquility and dissociation made Suarez wonder if the mind and body were connected. Did his life really belong to him? Suarez grappled with these questions and thoughts as he asserted himself over a disease that seemed impossible to control.

In this episode with Ray we discuss the many details of his treatment.  The good, the bad and the ugly.

“I felt like I was invulnerable before, even as I got older, I was, as someone who's ridden 1000s and 1000s and 1000s of miles on a bike saddle. I've been banged up by broken ribs, I fractured my wrist. I've been concussed. Lots of road rash and stuff. And I always just I shook it off and went back to doing what I needed to do. I never thought, Oh, I'm a vulnerable person. I must be ginger about this or take care of this. I just didn't think that way. Well, some of that it has been revealed to me by being a cancer patient is an illusion. And you're always in a little bit of danger.”

Such a powerful statement from the conversation.  Tune in to hear the rest of the interview!
