The National Weather Service provides the latest updates and information on the Atmospheric River impacting Northern California. The arguments for and against AB 734, which would require children in the state to be at least 12-years-old to play tackle football. Mariachi Bonitas, a Northern California all-female mariachi band, shares music from their first album.

We're in a revolving door of winter weather across the Sacramento Valley with even more snow on tap for the Sierra. The weekend brought more soaking rain and snow including a confirmed EF-1 tornado to Tuolumne County,  and more is in store this weekend. The National Weather Service in Sacramento joined Insight to provide an update on the forecast and the potential for flooding and severe winds. 

Youth tackle football bill

For many Americans, tackle football is more than a sport, but a deeply rooted tradition woven into the fabric of the nation’s cultural identity. And millions of children across the country are introduced to the sport well before high school. But a bill introduced by California Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (a Democrat who represents a large portion of Sacramento) would prohibit children under the age of 12 from playing tackle football out of concern for their brain health. Assemblymember McCarty introduced AB 734 in part due to what he says is growing research linking youth tackle football and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (or CTE), a degenerative brain disease that’s been found postmortem in the brains of former NFL and college football players. But opponents of the bill say California is already a leader in making the game safer for children and this bill is an overreach of parental rights to decide if their children should play a sport they believe provides benefits and opportunities for young athletes. Insight invited two guests to share why they respectively support and oppose the bill. Co-Founder of the California Youth Football Alliance who is lobbying state lawmakers to vote down this bill. Dr. Chris Nowinski is a neuroscientist and co-founder of the Concussion Legacy Foundation and believes the bill is an important step to protecting children from the harm he says they can’t fully understand. 

Mariachi Bonitas

Since 2020 Dinorah Klinger and her all-female Mariachi band have graced concert halls and festivals throughout Northern California and the world with their scintillating and soulful music. And after nearly three years of performing, Dinorah and Mariachi Bonitas have released their first album. The album and its titled song, “Por Ser Mujer” is dedicated to the endearing strength and perseverance of women all over the world. Dinorah Klingler, singer, and manager of Mariachi Bonitas, joined Insight to tell us more about the album, how it pays homage to women of all cultures, and share what we can expect next from the band.
