Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg

When we slow down and take stock of 2022, a lot happened this year. Like most places, Sacramento was hoping to move forward after two years of the pandemic and all of the economic challenges to get up and running again with a vibrant downtown. But a mass shooting in the city center in April, followed by another deadly shooting in downtown, shook a feeling of safety as families mourned the senseless loss. Meantime, the crisis of homelessness remains front and center, as well as an ongoing affordable housing crunch. But out of tragedy and challenges comes change. There is a renewed focus on safety and security, including a new police chief. Voters approved a measure billed as a tool to curb and help those unhoused. And continuing on the bright side, we’ve had some few-and-far-between wins and underdog stories that spark the spirit of one of the most diverse places in all of California. Mayor Darrell Steinberg joined Insight to talk all things Sacramento with hindsight and an eye toward the future.

A Music of their Own

Music is powerful. It’s transformative, can spark a movement, and touch our souls. But as an industry, it has long been dominated by men. A new CapRadio podcast, “A Music of Their Own,” uncovers the stories of women who have carved a path to success despite the odds. The host and producer of the podcast is Majel Connery, a vocalist, composer, and musicologist making unique sounds of “electro dream-pop” with classical influences. She applies this experience and an extensive academic career to the podcast series to highlight the extraordinary women in the music industry. Majel provided Insight a preview of the first season, which highlights the accomplishments of women at the top of their field in classical works, an industry where only 12% of the music programmed by American orchestras over the last year was written by women.
