Halloween season continues as we discuss the gothic supernatural horror The Orphanage (El Orfanato), a Spanish horror film full of spooky kids, great performances, grief, fairy tales, games, beautiful cinematography, red sweaters, and some good old fashioned terror.


The Orphanage (Spanish: El orfanato) is a 2007 Spanish gothic supernatural horror film and the debut feature of Spanish filmmaker J. A. Bayona. The film stars Belén Rueda as Laura, Fernando Cayo as her husband, Carlos, and Roger Príncep as their adopted son Simón. The plot centers on Laura, who returns to her childhood home, an orphanage. Laura plans to turn the house into a home for disabled children, but after an argument with Laura, Simón goes missing.


 


"The Monkey's Paw" is a supernatural short story by author W. W. Jacobs, first published in England in the collection The Lady of the Barge in 1902. In the story, three wishes are granted to the owner of The Monkey's Paw, but the wishes come with an enormous price for interfering with fate. It has been adapted many times in other media, including The Twilight Zone, The Simpson’s, and Are You Afraid Of The Dark.
