Remembering Colia Clark

Colia Clark, a pillar of the American civil rights movement passed away on November 4 at the age of 82. She worked with the NAACP alongside Medgar Evers in Mississippi. Then, as a member of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), she played key roles in the effort to establish equal voting rights in Selma, Alabama and the Birmingham Campaign. Later she worked with Cynthia Mckinney in her Presidential Campaign and ran for the Senate from New York twice on the Green Party ballot line. She was more recently a vocal supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement and chair of Grandmothers for the Release of Mumia Abu Jamal.
She was also a professor at SUNY Albany. In March 2013, she spoke at the Sanctuary for Independent Media about the importance of Troy and this area in the underground railroad and the the resistance to slavery.
