Bestselling author, Joe Dispenza, D.C., was one of the scientists featured in the award-winning film What the BLEEP Do We Know!? Since that movie’s release in 2004, his work has expanded, deepened, and spiraled in several key directions—all of which reflect his passion for exploring how people can use the latest findings from the fields of neuroscience and quantum physics to not only heal illness but also to enjoy a more fulfilled and happy life. Dr. Joe is driven by the conviction that each one of us has the potential for greatness and unlimited abilities. In this show, we discuss his newly released book, You are Placebo: Making Your Mind Matter.

Mary first opens this show by sharing a personal story of recovering from surgery in part via the placebo effect. Joe defines placebo as meaning “to please” then explains the background of how placebos foster healing. The concept of “nocebo” is described as the opposite of a placebo. Joe shares a story to demonstrate the effect of the nocebo, when some one believed he would die, then did so without serious reason for the death.

The placebo works on expectations. As Joe says, “Just because you’ve been diagnosed with a condition doesn’t necessarily mean you have to have any of the symptoms” If you provide an option for a new expectation and embrace being well rather than sick, you provide an opportunity for changing the diagnosis. Joe discusses how most thoughts and feelings come from past memories, which are etched in our brains. If you take a thought and attach it to a feeling, it becomes an attitude. A series of good thoughts connected to good feelings becomes a good attitude. How you think and feel creates a state of being. Attitude is a “shortened state of being.” If you string attitudes together and events together, that becomes a belief. A belief is a thought you keep thinking or events you keep experiencing so you hard-wire your brain into a set of circuitry.

When you string beliefs together, it becomes a perception, which is affects choices you make, relationships, behaviors, etc.

To change a belief or perception, you must change your fundamental state of being.

Joe describes epigenetics and how we can become our own genetic engineers. Meditation and Yoga can create thousands of new genes. Joe explains the connection between meditation and “being the placebo.” Meditation slows down the brain wave patterns so our inner world becomes more real than the outer world and we can drop down into the subconscious autonomic system. When you become the placebo, you “marry a clear intention with an elevated emotion, your brain and body are no longer in the past but in the future.” Keep doing that and new brain programming will start to occur.
