Since no film or franchise emerges out of a cultural vacuum, Star Wars Film School takes a look at some of the films and filmmakers who inspired and continue to breathe life into our beloved galaxy far, far away. This episode is dedicated to Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, which was released in 1979 and stars Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, and Robert Duvall. The Vietnam War film, which is an adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, follows Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) who is sent on a mission to assassinate Colonel Kurtz, a deserter who is allegedly masquerading the god of a local tribe, deep within the Cambodian forest. We discuss Lucas' shared history with the creators of the movie, as well as influences we see in the prequel trilogy and new era films, as well as the new canon novels.
