Sekukkulu is celebrated on December 25 and is one of the most important holidays in Uganda. Everywhere you go, you hear people wishing "Sekukkulu Ennugi", which means "Merry Christmas".
On Sekukkulu, all things stand still, and the focus of the celebrations is, of course, the birth of Jesus Christ. The festivities begin the night before, first at church and then at home, where children help prepare the house, food and meat for the big feast the next day.
People like to dress up for Sekukkulu, in their finest or new clothes, and women often wear the traditional dresses and headdresses because, after all, it is a festival! The churches are decorated with candles and filled to capacity - even with people who don't normally go - and everyone enjoys the festive atmosphere and sings traditional songs.
