Laura A. Saunders, MSSW is a social worker with expertise in Motivational interviewing (MI). She works with University of Wisconsin-Madison at the Great Lakes Addictions, Mental Health, and Prevention Technology Transfer Centers. Saunders leads motivational interviewing workshops for professionals in many fields including health care, education, human services, public health, and criminal justice. She is an active member of the international group of Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).

In this podcast, Laura Saunders talks with Helen Osborne about:

Motivational interviewing. How it is a collaborative, conversational style between two equal partners to draw out and strengthen a person’s own reasons to change their behaviors, thoughts, and attitudes.
The strategy of EPE in motivational interviewing. This includes 1) eliciting from the patient what they know, 2) providing information from the practitioner, and 3) eliciting from the patient again about what they want to change, or do.
How the goals of health literacy and motivational interviewing often overlap. The MI style can assist practitioners in ways to offer information so it’s more likely to be heard rather than raise patient defensiveness.
