Alex Villanueva has been a Los Angeles County Sheriff since 2011, after defeating former Sheriff Lee Baca.

What's his plan to regain the public's trust? He is implementing new policies, including a plan to cut back on overtime. He's also cracking down on the abuse of civil forfeiture laws, which allow law enforcement to seize property from suspected criminals and keep the proceeds.

Why is he taking these steps? Public trust in law enforcement has been declining since the rampart scandal of the late 1990s. He is also tackling a problem with deputies who feel they can't be honest with supervisors about misconduct because of fear that they would lose their jobs.

Alex holds degrees from the California State University, Long Beach and the Western State University College of Law. He is also an Eagle Scout.

What does he plan to do in office? He has promised to reopen unsolved murder cases and make sure that victims' families are compensated as well as fight for stricter penalties for domestic violence offenders.
