Welcome to Season 3 of Hashing Out the Law. I am your host Arash Hashemi. In the local elections of November 2020, the incumbent District Attorney of Los Angeles County was defeated by the Former District Attorney of San Francisco County (not Alameda County) George Gascón. In his first day in office, Gascón introduced some radical directives meant to reform the County’s criminal justice system. One of these changes was the abolishment of cash bail.

This brings us to our guest this episode: Jefferey Clayton. He is the Executive Director of the American Bail Coalition. Jeff is also a licensed attorney and has worked as the General Counsel for the Professional Bail Agents of Colorado. Jeff explains why Gascón may want to abolish cash bail, but he doesn’t have the power to do so. (Recorded 01/12/2021)
