Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Jim Clayton, Award Winning Jazz Musician

About Harvey's guest:

Today’s guest, Baayork Lee, is a highly accomplished, award-winning jazz pianist, music director and vocalist whose singular repertoire is a mix of standards, reimagined pop classics, and his own original songs, all delivered with a distinct New Orleans jazz vibe.

His first 5 albums are all instrumental: “Muskoka: Jim Clayton’s Greenhouse”, “Songs My Daughter Knows” and “Lenny Jumps In”, both of which scored high on North American Jazz Radio charts, and 2 collaborations with guitarist Andrew Scott entitled, “August” and “So Nice”, winning Best Jazz Recording at the Canadian Urban Music Awards, and TWICE winning Group Of The Year at the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards.   And his brand new album, “Look Out”, marks his vocal debut.  The album, recorded in New Orleans with jazz heavyweights Herlin Riley on drums and Amina Scott on bass, includes a great mix of jazz standards like “This Can’t be Love”, reinvented pop classics like “Moon River”, “Time in a Bottle”, and “Every Breath You Take”, and theme songs from his youth including “Rainbow Connection”, the “Spiderman” theme and even a song from MASH.

Prior to the pandemic, our guest had a very successful career as a pianist and music director.  He spent a decade as music director for the world renowned Second City theatre company, entertaining audiences around the globe.   He’s worked with Martin Short, Dan Ackroyd, Deborah Cox, and many others, and his music has been heard internationally on radio, in film, and on television.   And then, during the pandemic, he began giving vocal performances at the piano, from his home, on social media.  In a show that became known as “Jim’s Piano Bar”, he gave more than 750 online performances, quickly becoming a global sensation, with tens of thousands of new followers.  Before he knew it, he was in demand everywhere as a performer, he signed on with a new manager, and he recorded the new album.  Downbeat Magazine called his music “warm, happy and soulful”, and I couldn’t agree more.
