Andrew Johnson was born on December 29, 1808 in Raleigh, NC. He was poor, uneducated, and indentured to a tailor who he ran away from when he was 15 years old. He was a southern Democrat who was loyal to the Union, a contrast to President Abraham Lincoln. Forty-two days after his inauguration, “Andy” Johnson became the 17th POTUS when President Lincoln was assassinated.
