In this video session, Hyderabad’s noted dermatologist & trichologist and one of the Best Hair Transplant Surgeons in Hyderabad, Dr John Watts answers a select question related to the side effects of using an unsterilized derma roller in the saloon or a hair clinic. He also addresses queries on the ideal time to use hair oil after a hair transplant surgery. Dr John has performed over 2000+ hair transplant surgeries successfully.

Ravi P asks: Sir, I want to know what happens if an unsterilized derma roller is used in a hair treatment centre. Won’t it increase the chances of spreading blood-borne infections like bloodborne viruses such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV to the user? Shouldn’t it be safe If I procure my own Derma roller and use it instead? Please explain

In response to the above queries by Ravi P, Dr John Watts answered in the affirmative saying that such negligent practice can be dangerous but this is something one should not worry about while availing services in licensed hair transplant clinics that are run by qualified practitioners.

“If you visit quacks and unlicensed hair treatment centres looking for cheap treatment alternatives, you may come across such unsafe and unethical practices but those licensed centres run by trained practitioners always keep patient safety in mind,” informed Dr John Watts.

It is significant to note that derma roller uses a penetrative technique involving micro needles on the scalp that can result in bleeding. If some patient has a blood-borne infection and the same derma roller is shared without following sterilization protocol, there is a chance of the infection spreading to the other users.

“But one does not need to worry as licensed hair treatment centres always use a separate derma roller specific for a patient or thoroughly sterilize it before using it for another patient,” informed Dr John Watts.

However, he said that it is safer if one buys a low-depth derma roller for use at home under medical supervision but Dr John Watts cautioned users saying that one should always maintain a gap of 20 days between two sessions.

A Prithviraj asks: Sir, I want to know when I can start using hair oil after a hair transplant procedure. Please explain

In response to the above query by Prithviraj, Dr John Watts explained that transplanted hair is usually shed between 15–20 days after the transplant procedure and one may start taking hair medication between 25–30 days after the procedure.

“From the 30th day, you may start using hair oil but if you have been prescribed Minoxidil topical application you need to stop using it that day,” informed Dr John Watts, advising him not to use hair oil and Minoxidil together.

After the overnight hair oil application, one needs to wash the hair thoroughly with water the next day and resume Minoxidil for that day.
