Better Decisions: The Art of Choice

Decision-making - it's the bedrock of our lives, shaping every experience from the mundane to the monumental.

Our approach to decision-making isn’t always thorough, and therein lies the potential for growth.

1. The Comfort of Habitual Decisions:

Often, we navigate routine decisions on autopilot. The familiar barber, the trusted mechanic, the well-worn route home - these choices, while not necessarily the ‘best,’ work.

Each brings a sense of comfort and efficiency. While this serves us well for day-to-day tasks, it can also inhibit exploration.

Stepping outside our comfort zones, trying a new restaurant, or exploring a different route might just unlock better results and experiences!

2. Intuition vs. Expertise:

For infrequent, high-consequence decisions, we might rely on intuition, crafting narratives in our heads about the “right” choice. While gut instinct holds value, neglecting expert advice can be costly.

Seek out expertise relevant to your decision, whether it's a financial advisor for major investments or a doctor for health concerns.

Diversifying your sources of information leads to better, well-rounded choices.

“Good decisions come from experience. Experience comes from bad decisions.”~ Nelson Mandela

3. From Good to Great: Just add Awareness

We often view decisions as binary: good or bad. But the reality is that our choices and results rest upon a spectrum.

A “good” decision today might become a “great" decision with a little more awareness, thoroughness and effort.

Take the time to reflect on your current decisions by assessing potential alternatives and related narratives. Then, actively seek resources to assist you in up-leveling your “good” decisions to “great.”

Remember, making better decisions is a process to refine and revisit.

By challenging your autopilot routine, seeking expert advice, and actively seeking improvement, you unlock the potential for greatness in every choice you make.

“The quality of your life is the quality of your decisions.” ~ Bob Dylan

From the world of statistics: All models are flawed, but some are useful.

We asked Google’s AI experiment Gemini to “break” the “3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System” behavior model.

The short story (no pun intended), is he/she/IT could not.

The best Gemini could offer: “What about people who aren’t aware of their unconscious stories/thinking?”

It’s a good question and a nice attempt. However, an unconscious story is still a story (represented within the model), and that is the point of the latest book, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY where the latest version of the model was revealed.

BTW: You are invited to try and “break” the “3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System” behavior model as well.

If you think you can, please email or leave comments here.

*Note: ChatGPT’s does not know the model yet, officially published in October of 2022. GPT’s latest update is from January 2022.

“The Three Circles of Behavior Echo-System” / The Grunburg Behavior Model is a holistic, fluid, and dynamic behavior-change model. It’s the very first behavior-change model to demonstrate how our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and even our environment vibrate (echo and reverberate) to influence each other.

Hence, it’s an “Echo-System” not an eco-system. All prior behavior models represent human behavior in a linear-flow type diagram. Background here.

If you’d like to understand human behavior at an even deeper level, learn more about the “Three Circles of Behavior Echo-System” which is featured in the book, “EVERYTHING!”

I teach and coach organizations and individuals worldwide how to best utilize and leverage “The Three Circles of Behavior Echo-System” (below) and the P.A.R.R. [Plan, Act, Record & Reassess] scientifically-backed methodology for individual and organizational behavior design.
