As a kid, I was scared to challenge anything or anyone. Authority figures were right. The mainstream was right. The rules I had to follow must have been right. And I followed the status quo because I was “supposed to” and I was afraid of being wrong.
Somewhere along the path, I started questioning things. I even spoke up about what I believed, and learned to think for myself because I realized that just because society or “mainstream” says this is how it “should” be, doesn’t mean it’s true.
Before 1919, it was status quo that women didn’t have the right to vote. In the seventies, the women weren’t allowed to have their own line of credit. We’ve proved both of these “normalcies” wrong, so it’s obvious that we’re following rules today that someday even “mainstream” will deem ridiculous. (By the way, the earth is not flat)
A true leader challenges the status quo, pushes the limits, and strives to make tomorrow better than today. In other words…a true leader, LEADS, does not follow.
Lisa Levy and I had an in depth conversation about challenging the status quo. She’s the author of Future Proofing Cubed and the founder of L Cubed Consulting and she isn’t afraid to speak her truth. She started her career in corporate America, which was fine until she realized that nothing innovative was happening at work. So, she walked away from a 401k and paid time off, and she created her own consulting business. On my podcast, Lisa talked about why it’s important to push the limits, and why the accepted way of doing things isn’t always the best way.
In this episode, we discuss:
When rule following is actually harmful
How to create something radical and new by rejecting the status quo
How artificial intelligence can actually encourage creativity and innovation
Finding ways to truly get paid for your value
Leaning into uncertainty and being okay with taking risks
