Malaysia got its second unelected government in a row on August 20, when the king appointed Ismail Sabri Yaakob prime minister. The new PM is from the United Malaysia National Organisation (UMNO), which lost the last general election in 2018 after monopolising power since 1957, when British colonial rule ended.

Peter Boyle spoke to Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) deputy chairperson S. Arutchelvan (better known as Arul) via Zoom on September 7.
