September 3rd, 1985 was a cool fall day in Saint John, New Brunswick. It was the day after Labour Day and everyone was transitioning into back to school, back to work and back to cooler temperatures. In Saint John it was a very popular time as The Atlantic National Exhibition was taking place. The ANE is an annual fair that features art, crafts, horticulture, livestock exhibits, family entertainment and a midway. The ANE was filled with laughter, happiness and good times. Unfortunately though on this date things would take a turn for one person in particular that was at the fair and today, 37 years later it is still a night that is remembered with sadness, confusion and heartbreak.
