Episode 14: Dallas Hunt & Emily Riddle

In this episode, poet and professor Dallas Hunt joins friend of the show Emily Riddle for a conversation about his new poetry collection CREELAND. They chat about who they write for, how they conceptualize contemporary Indigenous-settler relations, what it means to inhabit an Indigenous body, and more. 

Dallas Hunt is Cree and a member of Wapsewsipi (Swan River First Nation) in Treaty Eight territory in northern Alberta. His creative work has appeared in publications such as Contemporary Verse 2, Prairie Fire, PRISM international, and Arc Poetry. His children’s book, Awâsis and the World-Famous Bannock, was published through Highwater Press in 2018 and was nominated for several awards, including the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award. Hunt is currently an assistant professor of Indigenous literatures at the University of British Columbia. CREELAND, his debut poetry collection, is out April 2021 with Nightwood Editions.

Emily Riddle is nehiyaw and a member of the Alexander First Nation. She is a writer, library worker, and researcher currently based in amiskwaciwȃskahikan (Edmonton). Her writing has been published in Teen Vogue, The Globe and Mail, Vice, Canadian Art, and PRISM International, among others. Her debut poetry chapbook is forthcoming from Moon Jelly House in 2021.
