For some of the Psalms, we can actually find the occasion for the writing, and our Psalm this week is an example. Psalm 51 was written after the horrible, wicked, sinful failure with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah had been exposed by the Holy Spirit. Before, David had been trying to work a massive government cover-up, but the confrontation leaves him seeing his sin clearly, morning it deeply, and walking toward authentic repentance. We need this Psalm on speed dial as it gives us a great prayer to lift from the depths of our sinful moments. What we find is the mercy of Christ in the midst.
